
About Me
Sreya Muthukumar is a trailblazing multidisciplinary artist whose work spans music, dance, theater, and film. Formerly the lead vocalist of the arena rock band Shorthand, Sreya is now stepping into the spotlight with her solo music project, blending her signature powerhouse vocals with cinematic storytelling.
An accomplished dancer and choreographer, Sreya is trained in Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Ballet, Bollywood and contemporary dance. As an actor, Sreya has her roots in theatre, and has appeared in several ads, plays, short films and web shows on Amazon Prime and Netflix. Sreya brings her unique artistry and vision to every medium she touches, creating work that resonates deeply with themes of identity, power, and transformation.
Her productions blend these modalities to offer immersive, genre-bending experiences that weave together movement, emotion, and narrative. An inventive and confident teacher, Sreya received her MFA in Dance at the University of Michigan, where she not only excelled academically but also developed and taught several courses to undergraduate students.
Music:
Whether it is gentle melody or powerhouse vocals, Sreya’s stirring vocals offer an emotional and versatile sound. She was the lead vocalist of the arena rock band Shorthand for five years, during which she performed extensively around the country at notable venues and music festivals like the NH7 Weekender, Hard Rock Cafe, The Piano Man and many more.
Sreya is now focusing on her eponymous solo music project, where she combines her signature vocal style with witty lyricism and a dancer’s rhythm, creating a sound that is artistic, immersive and enjoyable.
Sreya is also an accomplished voice over artist and has lent her voice to several ad campaigns.
Sreya’s music has been featured in publications like Homegrown and the New Indian Express.


Dance:
Sreya began her dance training at a young age, studying Bharatanrityam under the guidance of Guru Smt Shraddha Kumar. She has since trained in a wide variety of dance forms including Odissi, Bollywood, Ballet, Hip-hop, Jazz, Improv, Kathak and West African dance. Possessing a natural grace, light-footedness and arresting expressions, Sreya is a versatile and adaptable dancer who is always open to learning new movement styles. Her ability to weave together multiple styles makes her a distinctive performer and choreographer.
Theater and Film:
Sreya has been acting from a young age, appearing in advertisements, short films, plays, and web series on both Amazon Prime and Netflix. Her work in theater and film is informed by her interdisciplinary approach, blending performance techniques from dance, theater, and film to create unique narratives. In addition to her acting skills, Sreya excels in public speaking and performs confidently across a range of genres—whether it’s comedy, drama, or anything in between. Her ability to seamlessly switch between styles and deliver powerful performances makes her a standout in any medium.
She has received drama training under Kirtana Kumar of Theatre Lab, Guru Venu G at Natanakairali, and the faculty of the Theatre Department at University of Michigan


Workshops and Teaching:
As an instructor, Sreya has taught everything from large convention-style Bollywood classes to Indian classical dance technique to beginners and advanced students alike, even facilitating dance-theatre explorations in an intimate classroom setting.
She draws from her interdisciplinary approach to provide an inspiring, organised and energising classroom experience that pushes each student to achieve their unique potential.
Sreya also facilitates holistic body awareness and dance-theatre workshops that integrate yoga, somatics, and meditation techniques. In these workshops, her teaching is focused on helping people reconnect with their bodies through movement and mindfulness, form connections with themselves and tap into their inner performer.
